I Have Lost My Pet

If you have lost your pet you may wish to try the following options;

  • telephone local veterinary surgeries to see if your pet has been taken in
  • contact the local dog warden where appropriate
  • look at lost pet sites such as www.doglost.co.uk or www.petslocated.com
  • contact local rescue organisations to see if your pet has been handed in
  • make posters for local community notice boards, veterinary surgeries and some pet stores that allow such advertisements
  • contact the national charity on 0300 1234 999 to log details of your pet on the 'LOST & FOUND' register

Contact information for all of the above are available on our ‘CONTACT’ page.

If you would like to place a 'lost' notice on the branch's public gallery 'LOST' please email admin@rspca-reading.org.uk with the following information putting LOST in the subject heading:

  • a recent photograph of the animal
  • date and area it was last seen
  • age (approximation if date unknown)
  • your contact details
  • any existing health conditions requiring regular medication
  • if the animal is microchipped or is wearing a collar/tag
  • any distinguishing markings or features (e.g. one leg, white ears)

A donation, no matter how small, would be very much appreciated for the use of this service.

Please NOTE that the information you provide will be available on a public web site.

The RSPCA cannot be held responsible for any external communication made by using this facility. Advertisements will remain in the gallery for 30 days after which they will automatically be removed.

I Have Found a Pet

CATS

The branch are unable to take in stray cats unless they are injured.  In all cases they are brought to us via the Inspectorate in the first instance so if you find a stray cat please call the national call centre on 0300 1234 999.

DOGS

If you find a stray dog it must to be reported to your nearest dog warden in the first instance.  Details of countywide dog warden services are available on our 'USEFUL INFORMATION' page under 'CONTACT'.  If you judge the dog to be friendly and approachable you may wish to provide it with short term shelter until the dog warden is able to collect it.  A bowl of fresh water will always be welcome.

RABBITS

If you find a stray rabbit and are safely able to capture it and keep it safe from predators (foxes, dogs & cats), give it a bowl of water and a few fresh vegetables.  Not lettuce and only a small quantity of carrots. Cabbage, broccoli and dandelion leaves are often favourites.

The find should be reported to the National Helpline with a request for it to be collected if you are unable to look after it yourself.

Rabbits may stray some distance from their home but it is worth asking neighbours if they know who has a pet rabbit.

If you wish to go further, posters or notices displayed on local community notice boards, in shops or veterinary surgeries  are helpful.
